kohikari: a suited dignitary lying on the ground, reaching for his hat, which has tumbled away in the commotion (my hat!!)
Every so often I think about posting something on Facebook, or Twitter. Sometimes I go so far as drafting it. I almost always change my mind and abandon it before posting. The drafts sit around in my notes app and gather dust, forgotten.

Let me tell you a story, one that I couldn't forget.

Around 10:30ish PM on Friday March 13th, I was walking along Boylston Street to Copley Station after my closing shift. There was a woman, probably intoxicated, wandering around talking and laughing loudly to herself on the sidewalk. Something about having found her phone after she thought she lost it? I shrugged and kept walking, because she was obviously harmless.

I had crossed the street at the intersection and almost gotten to the station when I noticed her shouting again, "Get off me." She was by the fancy glass-fronted Bank of America/Tuberculosis-12/AT&T stores, and there were several cops around her, grabbing her and patting her down. They forced her to the ground and six (6) big dudes bodily pinned her. She wasn't even really struggling, just yelling about it.

As I watched, more police vehicles with sirens and flashing lights kept pulling up. I counted nine (9) in total, each with at least two cops inside, all of which ran over and...stood around. Talking or something. While this poor woman was sat on by six people, then dragged up to her feet and restrained. I could barely see her through all the cops milling around her.

I am not exaggerating these numbers. The BPD sent almost two dozen officers, in enough vehicles to block off half the lanes of a major street, to tackle and hold down one (1) single unarmed drunk and/or mentally ill woman.

(You may have guessed it by now, knowing Boston and American policing in general, but she was Black.)

I think about her sometimes, about how confusing and horrible that experience must have been. I think about the police, wondering what the hell they thought they were doing. There's no way they could honestly have thought that situation needed so many officers, for one person who couldn't even fight back. Most of them ran over and then just casually stood around in a crowd, not even looking at her.

I wish I'd had a camera on me at the time. Not that it would have done her any good, but. Maybe having a video of it would have given me the confidence to go ahead and post that draft, instead of sitting on the memories for five and a half months.

[archive post of finalists past]

The AMV Contest is quickly shaping up to be my favorite part of the con.

(Apparently this year a record-breaking number of videos were entered: forms sent for 210, 194 uploaded, and 172 managed to qualify--and somehow Programming has managed to cram all of the overflow into the three days of the con.  (Perhaps this is connected to AB's expansion into the fifth floor of the Sheraton...)  Also apparently this year's is their biggest Best of Show trophy yet offered--it did look pretty hefty.  Also also the guy in charge of the AMV Contest (since 2005) is leaving(!!); fortunately, his successor managed to hook us up with neat little cards with a tear-off ballot, leaving us the listing to take home.  Sadly it doesn't leave much room for notes; I tend to scribble all over mine, and it can be difficult trying to decipher my own handwriting.)

This year I feel like putting the ballot up Friday night, instead of waiting until Saturday or Sunday or Monday when the winners have been announced.  Why the hell not.

First, the exhibition pieces!  After the last two years, I'm actually a little surprised there wasn't a My Little Pony remake of one of the previous year's winning AMVs.  (I think it was Bashar who did it? a version of Shin's 2012 Extraball vid, and a version of Ileia's 2013 Radioakshun vid.)  Largely kaiju-themed vids instead.
~ "Totoro Meets Godzilla" (Vlad G Pohnert), a loving homage to the classic "Bambi Meets Godzilla" (came as a bit of a surprise to those who haven't heard of the original; I do so love horrified audience reactions)
~ "Go Go Tohoscope!" (drewaconclusion), what seems like an actual music video--or at least a retrospective of live-action Godzilla films set to an extremely topical song.
~ "Otaku Paradise" (BecauseImBored1), a mashup/juxtaposition of anime clips and video of cosplayers at anime cons.  Gotta be honest with you, I had a bit of an attack of the feels during this vid.

(Before the exhibitions there was also a truly adorable paper-puppet video demonstrating proper emergency procedure.  I love this con.)

DRAMA (1 win) )

ACTION (3 wins!) )

ROMANCE (2 wins!) )

UPBEAT (2 wins) )

OTHER (1 win) )

FUN/COMEDY (2 wins) )

ROUNDUP: Ileia & Shin cleaned house this year!  And a Romance vid won Best of Show for the first time in...uh...ever at this con, to my knowledge.  (To be fair, it's far from classic romance.)
At the con feedback panel, AB staff mentioned that only six of the eleven awards were handed out in person this year (two to one person); the other five awards have to be shipped to the winners (two to one person), two of whom are in Seattle, one in Michigan, and one apparently busy running Anime Conji in San Diego.  As Anime Conji has a maddening website apparently lacking a staff listing, I have no idea which AMV belonged to that person.

* DISCLAIMER:  I don't know shit about AMV editing; I've never made one in my life.  I do really enjoy watching them every year, though!

I've been compiling lists of the winners and finalists in AB's Music Video Contest that I've seen at the conventions (just the winners from '06, '07, and '08, and all of the finalists from '09-present; in 2005 I didn't see any of them at all and therefore did not get the visceral effect of a video and audio system larger than my laptop, so I do not care, and '09 was the first year I actually went to the Contest showing instead of just watching the winners in Closing Ceremonies and/or the Masquerade).  I've been keeping it all in draft(s) on my Gmail account, which is where I keep all of my notes these days because (a) dude, it's searchable (b) my computer haets word processors with all the passion its battered little electronic soul can muster up (c) you can google your notes, how freaking awesome is that.  (Even if that means that I now have to find a backup for my cloud backup, and I'm not sure how...  *headdesk*)

Anyway!  I figure the draft is getting a little long for Gmail (on my computer, at least) to deal with without slowing down a little, so I'm putting it up here.

I, like many a starving college student/otaku/anyone on a budget or unwilling to wait more than 3 minutes (plus boiling water) to make food, have eaten a lot of cup ramen.  I'm a Maruchan brand loyalist, mostly because Top Ramen tastes fucking bizarre, and am most fond of their popular neon-orange-packaged Chicken flavor (although I did have a brief fling with the neon pink Shrimp flavor...those tiny freeze-dried crustaceans kind of creeped me out).  I also have been known to make a decent stir-fry with packaged ramen (using half a flavor packet to a whole package of noodles, draining the water before adding the flavoring, and including a healthy chunk of 100% real motherfucking butter, bitches).  You might say that I'm almost an instant ramen aficionado.

This, however, I did not see coming.

So, so, there's this "Gender Genie" thing, and the few times I poked it it seemed to think I was a man (an opinion with which my uterus would like to respectfully disagree), so I just threw a bunch of my old crap at it on a whim to see what would happen, and guess what!  I still have testicles.  (Although, contrary to the expectations of the many and manifold messages in my Gmail spambox, I actually am quite content with the size of my penis.)

*hem-hem*  So, looking at the results, I am clearly a shemale.  Although there isn't enough "female" to rate futanari or even straight-up hermaphrodite, so maybe I'm just a dude with really excellent man-breasts?  Like, F-cup.  (Or perhaps I'm flamingly gay, whichever works.)

Also, December apparently is like my month for posting things.  Geez.  Maybe the holiday season's collection of stimuli, school vacation's provision of free time, and the thrill of avoiding finals?  I also do an awful lot of statistics, although there's plenty of wank in there too...

Gaaah it's not even the right time of month and I've been craving tea and bad slashfic for the last several hours.  >.<  Should I blame it on the lack of sleep?  I did kinda pull an all-nighter doing this.  I get so much work done in the wee hours, though--it's so much easier to think and work without distractions or interruptions.  No parents or friends or roommates or neighbours, no TV or radio or phone conversations in the background.  Just me and the distant highway traffic.  It's difficult enough to focus without noise and people all over the place... Is it just me, or was NASA's move to name Node 3 "Tranquility" instead of "Colbert" or "Serenity" a total cop-out?

I can understand their logic in not using Colbert, if I squint and try to fit into a hyper-publicity-conscious headspace. I can even understand not using Serenity, and instead picking from the other top names (excluding, of course, the bot-flooded suggestions like Socialvibe and Myyearbook). But choosing a substitute that means the exact same thing as one of the top three winners in the opinion poll? That's just adding insult to injury.

http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/name_ISS/index.html

All that talk about democracy and populist votes. If they weren't going to pick the names that the people want, why put up an opinion poll at all?

Serenity VS Tranquility: Fight to the Death! )

Were I to put a clumsy analogy on it, I'd ask how the American public would have reacted if, after the 2000 elections, Congress had sent a pretty marathoner onto a talk show to propose that the new president be--not Bush, nor Gore--but Nader.

First off: a while back, can't quite remember when, I went around to all the sections that had hit my list and checked for character filters. I distinctly remember Pokemon not having one while a less likely section was more fortunate; alas, I lost the records, so I went around to all 43 sections and checked again. Every single one, and D.Gray-man, has been bedecked with a nice shiny new filter, except for the following: of the Final Fantasy titles, only the contributors in the thousands (I-VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XII) benefited, while the crumbs of the fandom (XIII, Versus XIII, Crystal Chronicles, Tactics, Tactics Advance, Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift) went without; of the Star Trek titles, curiously enough, all but the "Others" section had the filter--I guess the Trekkies have a solid enough foundation (or at least enough infamy) to merit closer attention; and, of course, the Wrestling section, because either nobody wants to deal with that or there are simply too many performers to keep straight.

But the more important part of the news is that D.Gray has character filters. *suppressed squee*

listy )

Half these people are faceless names who were all dead by the fourth tankoubon, and they forget to put in Anita-san?! Blasphemy! Oh well. This is ff.n, after all. Are people even paid to do stuff like this? Watch the whole thing be run by temps in their spare time when they're not in the sweatshops in some Southeast Asian country making sneakers. It would certainly explain a lot.

I probably shouldn't play with the filters until I'm sure everyone's been using them. So I'll keep to the usual for the D.Cute-section:

Overall, I heart this fandom and need to get back to trolling it before it gets too big for me to devour (if it hasn't already), and there are always the little moments when you find something so well-written that it hits you right there in the pit of your stomach, and it makes everything worth it. Viva fandom.

...The graphs are just so pretty. Also, I have this crippling need-to-know complex. And ADD. And...yeah, you know the deal.

Heavy Hitters (10K+ stories)

numbersnumbers )

It's been...uh...six months since the last check. This time, can't remember why, used decimals on the grand...oh well, it'll just complicate the comparison algorithm a little...although I just remembered that I've always hated subtracting. Damn sneaky numbers, always borrowing without asking first!...But yes! to the numbers: HP went up 21K, Naruto 25.5K, IY 3K. Roughly the same trends as always: Inuyasha fandom is in long-term cooling, Potterdom is still rolling along at the pace its sheer size requires, and the Narutards are still trying their darndest to cream Harry's British clock with a teeny-tiny (but very enthusiastic) Rasengan. Meanwhile, KH, FF7, Pokemon, Bleach, Supernatural, Stargate: SG-1, Avatar, Wrestling (god part of me still can't believe that section exists, and so prolific at that~ XDDD), High School Musical, Prince of Tennis, Sonic, and House have all bumped up; that can probably be attributed to new material in the respective franchises. Happy news!: we have new members of the Cool Kids clique--Doctor Who and Death Note (w00t ♥).  Also, Twilight doubled.

sad )

Also, on the D.Gray-front:  pre-February I think the archive had between 500 and 1000 stories; by the 23rd it was 1464; 2536 by the fourth of July; 2637 on the 14th; and the current story count is 4396.  If it keeps doubling every six months or so, and I do suspect that this trend will continue, then D.Gray-man will hit the Heavy Hitters in less than a year and work its way up.  The second the dub hits major broadcast channels, all the odds are on the side of there-goes-the-neighborhood, here-come-the-numbers.

(this is just part one, I'm coming up soon with something specifics on Naruto and D.Gray-man and characters and all those shiny new toys that have been updated...though I'm kind of embarrassed I don't recognise half the names on the D.Gray-list, it's really annoying they don't put full names)

Overall, damn but this fandom has grown fast.  And now that Funimation's licensed it for dubbing, the tsunami of American n00bfans can already be seen in the distance, ready to turn my precious precious tinyfandom into the likes of Bleach, Inuyasha, and Naruto.  I don't know whether I want to swell with pride or lock D.Gray-man in its room and tell it it's not allowed to date until it's thirty...  *sob*  They grow up so fast...

(Also, this would have been posted like five days ago had the computer not been taken apart, moved from one room from another, put back together, broke down, fixed, caught a virus, quarantined, scanned, and reset.  AND THEN LIVEJOURNAL DECIDED TO HATE ME.  Mother of God.  *deathglares at evilthing*)

I have to share this computer with my mother, so I don't have the time or resources to update the D.Gray-man or Naruto stats yet.

I reviewed the heavy hitters in all the categories (comics is still utterly bereft of anything significant):

Apart from the top three, nothing has really budged much except Kingdom Hearts (up 4K) and Twilight, which has actually doubled.  If it weren't for Jasper Fforde and Sarah Rees Brennan, I'd give up all hope for the future of modern literature.  (If anyone compares Stephanie Meyer to J.K. Rowling, they're lying.)

Over the 2007-08 holiday break, D.Gray-man ate my soul.

So of course I'm head over heels. ♥  And best of all, the D.Gray-fandom isn't even massive like Harry Potter and Naruto and Inuyasha--there's only a thousand or so stories on the Pit, which means I can go through them all and get an idea of what the fandom's about without missing anything.

Geh, don't have the energy to write any decent intro right now--just, here's the stats.

(Harry Potter is currently at 344,004 stories.  Naruto is at 126,092. Inuyasha lags behind at 78,031.  But WHO CARES about those big bloated depraved fandoms, when I have the world's cutest tinyfandom RIGHT HERE?~ ♥ ♥ ♥)

D.Gray-man has grown to 1464 stories (socute) (that's 59 pages, up 10p or 248s from two months ago!~
)

~Oh, look how much you've grown!~  *pinches D.Gray-fandom's cheeks, squashes to saggy bosom and leaves embarrassing fuschia lipstick marks on its face*
♥

Overall, the section has bloomed 22% in just two months, and if it keeps up it'll be a large healthy Pit-section in no time.  ^^  Sotiny~ Socute~

~So for the last couple months I've been powering through all 299 stories with 5000 words or more (code 5) (I'm ignoring the other 955 or so tinyfic, at least until they're big enough to warrant examination--there are far more phailfic and emo poetry than there are 1337 drabbles), and these are my observations thus far:

...I need a hobby.

Um. A different one, I mean. Maybe I need multiple hobbies. I'm just a liiittle too dangerous when I'm bored/procrastinating/avoiding something.

So.  First, since I knew Harry Potter was the most popular section overall and Naruto was the most popular section in the Anime/Manga category, I decided to check out the rest of the site so I could get an idea of what the rest of ff.n is like.

Heavy Hitters Per Category (10K+ stories)

(Note on URLs:

)

So.

As of today, there are 113K stories in the Naruto section. 4056 pages of English stories.

Let's see what the character statistics are like.

Most Popular Characters (with 100 pages or more)

...See, this is why I need a hobby. A hobby that maybe doesn't involve theatre, because acting classes just make me more special.

On to the pr0n!

Most Popular Pairings (with 30 pages or more)

Tendencies of the Long-Winded Fangirl (6 stories or more)

Compound Analysis:  I have way too much fun with this.

[[Don't want to slog through the knee-deep piles of crap in the archives of ff.n? Have no fear! Judy the Masochist will do it for you.]]

On September 4th I started a project to read and review (in a way) every novel-length fic in the most popular Naruto pairing on ff.n. Which means, a lot of yaoi. I suffer for my art. (Yes, OCD is my art.  Because I'm special.)

(BTW, KakaSaku has overtaken KakaIru/etc. as the eighth most popular pairing; between teacher/student and random yaoi pairing, I have to say no comment.)

(Have I posted the Naruto survey on this account yet? I don't think I have. Okay, top ten pairings on ff.n are, from first to tenth: SasuNaru/etc.; SasuSaku; NaruHina; NejiTen; NaruSaku; ItaSasu; SasuHina; KakaSaku; KakaIru/etc.; GaaSaku.)

I went ADD for a month between September 5 and October 8, and went slowly for the rest of the month because of senior year and all, but I finally finished it today~ *feels special* On the fourth there were 37 100K+ worded fics in this section; by today, there were 44. The seven newbies are GCH, FB, MB, ED, N:TNC, and LMMB. These crazy people, they just don't stop. Anywho, fics are arranged in order of publishing date; debatably coherent "review" follows each description. (Asterisks mark the fics on my stalk list, a.k.a. fics I actually care about.) Like so.

Fic Title (Author)
"Summary given, word for word (i even had enouhg sefl-control ot leave hte typos aloen)."
Rating - Genre(s) - # of Chapters - # of Words - # of Reviews - Date Published--Date Updated

Comments!

And, onward.

And best of all, now I don't have any reason to ever set foot in the archives of ff.n. EVER AGAIN.

*dances*

(I just did this incredibly complicated OCD thing, ten times the complexity of my OFNPR projects, for essentially fourteen hours straight, stopping only for food and to convince my mother that I was going to actually get sleep. And I enjoyed it. Ye gods, something really is wrong with me.)
