...I need a hobby.
Um. A different one, I mean. Maybe I need multiple hobbies. I'm just a liiittle too dangerous when I'm bored/procrastinating/avoiding something.
So. First, since I knew Harry Potter was the most popular section overall and Naruto was the most popular section in the Anime/Manga category, I decided to check out the rest of the site so I could get an idea of what the rest of ff.n is like.

(Note on URLs:
Category and section are words, i.e. anime, tv, book, movie, misc, game, comic, cartoon; Naruto, Harry_Potter, etc.
All the rest is in numbers.
All ratings is 10, K-T is 3, T is 13, pr0n is 14, etc.
All genres is 0, General is 1, Romance is 2, Humor is 3, Drama is 4, Poetry is 5, Angst is 10, etc.
English is 1, Spanish is 2, etc.
Sort by: Update Date is 1, Publish Date is 2.
All lengths is 0, 1K is 1, 20K is 20, 100K is 100, etc.
I'm not entirely clear on the character codes, but I do know that for the Naruto section, Naruto is 2039, Sasuke is 2040, Sakura is 2041, and Hinata is 2045. The URL may be selecting from a pan-site character base to which the Naruto characters were added after 2038 others. All characters available in the section is 0.
All statuses is 0, In-Progress is 1, Complete is 2.
I have no clue what the second-to-last bit is; it doesn't work with any other numbers. Verification, maybe?
Aaand the last number is for the page number.
So, http://www.fanfiction.net/anime/Naruto/10/0/1/1/100/2039/2040/0/0/1 is fresh meat for sporkage that I will get around to...sooner or later.
It's liek a sekrit CODE. 8D
)
So.
As of today, there are 113K stories in the Naruto section. 4056 pages of English stories.
Let's see what the character statistics are like.
Most Popular Characters (with 100 pages or more)
2.) Uzumaki Naruto (1100p)
3.) Haruno Sakura (813p)
4.) Hyuuga Hinata (364p)
5.) Sabaku no Gaara (246p)
6.) Hatake Kakashi (226p)
7.) Hyuuga Neji (221p)
8.) Uchiha Itachi (214p)
9.) Nara Shikamaru and Tenten (132p)
10.) Yamanaka Ino (116p)
Analysis: The boys are pretty much up there, and of their own merit, either for their character or for Teh Ghey or to be paired with someone else. Together they take up a good 44% of the entire section. Sakura isn't too far behind, but most of the reason she's so popular is because fangirls use her (and Hinata) for either self-insertion with their favorite Hawt Guys, or for their character but still to be paired with the Hawt Guys. (Gen is so underappreciated.) After that are the Hawt Guys. Notice that they're all in the same general area of popularity. One statistic that will always be true is that fanfiction tends to be written by teenage girls. These teenage girls all tend to have Bad Boy kinks. Fact: 20% of the Naruto stories are rated pr0n. Coincidence? I think not. (Ah, the sad fate of the yuri fans, to be oppressed by the rabid het fans and the rabid yaoi fans! Alas.) Then there's Shikamaru and Ino, who exist solely to be paired with each other (and often with Temari as well), and poor Tenten. Oh, Tenten. 77% of your stories are just so you can be paired with Neji. Such selectiveness in choice of partners is unprecedented in the other characters (like Naruto, who can be found to pair with at least eighty others). Maybe if Kishimoto had given you a backstory--or a personality--or hell, even a full name--but no. Such is your fate.
...See, this is why I need a hobby. A hobby that maybe doesn't involve theatre, because acting classes just make me more special.
On to the pr0n!
Most Popular Pairings (with 30 pages or more)
2.) SasuSaku (390p)
3.) NaruHina (163p)
4.) NejiTen (101p)
5.) NaruSaku (99p)
6.) ItaSasu/SasuIta/wtfe (65p)
7.) SasuHina (63p)
8.) KakaSaku (54p)
9.) GaaSaku and KakaIru/IruKaka/wtfe (52p)
10.) ShikaIno (45p)
11.) ItaSaku (40p)
12.) ShikaTema (36p)
13.) NaruGaa/GaaNaru/wtfe (35p)
Analysis: RYFGs are scary. I will concede this point. But those rabid het fangirls, they're damn persistent. They're catching up to the crazy yaoi pr0n. That's quite a feat. However, I'm obligated to say that they will never overcome the canon subtexty pairing that looms over all the rest. That one's too obvious to ever die.
Tendencies of the Long-Winded Fangirl (6 stories or more)
1.) NaruHina (4p; 80s)
2.) SasuNaru/etc. (3p; 51s)
3.) SasuSaku (2p; 37s)
4.) NaruSaku (18s)
5.) KakaSaku and ShikaTema (9s)
6.) SasuHina, KakaIru/etc., NaruIno, and KyuuNaru/um? (8s)
7.) NejiTen (6s)
Analysis: Remember what I said about het shippers being persistent? NaruHinatards define the term. I respect that. There is great power in OCD. Also, more evidence that NaruSaku has a good chance of advancing in the lines.
Note: As working with the major pairings alone was inconclusive, I expanded the terms of 'major' to 15 pages or more. The pairings with 15 to 29 pages, in that order (a.k.a. from least to greatest), are KakaSasu/LeeSaku, InoSaku, NaruIno/LeeGaa(etc.), KibaHina/KakaNaru/KyuuNaru, ItaNaru, GaaHina, NejiSaku, and NejiHina. Ah, fangirls.
Compound Analysis: I have way too much fun with this.

on 2007-Dec-16, Sunday 23:28 (UTC). . . Avatar being in the Anime/Manga section makes me laugh and cry a little at the same time. D:
Jeez, is GaaSaku really that popular? It's always struck me as one of those out-of-nowhere pairings that only a dozen people were REALLY into . . . but I guess there are a lot of fans of it!
Either that or those dozen fans are hella prolific. x3

on 2007-Dec-16, Sunday 23:58 (UTC)(Does Avatar count as a cartoon then? I dunno how the people in charge of categorization do it, animation is animation to me...)
Alt-pairings and crack pairings can have enormous fanbases. Sometimes it's because a writer thinks two characters will work well together as a couple, and have an interesting dynamic; sometimes it's for the pretty; sometimes it's that type of self-insertion writer who uses a canon character as an avatar for their own self, so they can be with another of their favorite characters. Everyone has their own reasons for fandom.

Hell, definitely. I concur. We really do need more gen in the fanfic sections... *waves genfic flag*
Fact: 20% of the Naruto stories are rated pr0n. Coincidence? I think not.
Good god, 20%? Allow me a moment while I commit seppuku. That's just... too much pr0n. And poor Tenten, indeed. I like your analysis; for the crazy teen fangirls, it really is all about the 'shipping. *sigh*
However, I'm obligated to say that they will never overcome the canon subtexty pairing that looms over all the rest. That one's too obvious to ever die. XD Considering the difference in number of pages between #1 and #2, definitely.
I must confess a pet peeve for the KakaIru pairing and the like, which never made sense to me because the one time they spoke was utterly lacking in UST. <_< Same here. I am quite open to reading any pairing, but it'd better be a very believable fic for KakaIru. Sort of smacks me in the face like a nonexistent flopping fish. I like your reports. Your sarcastic comments are especially fun to read. :D

(I know! 12,609 of them! It's crazy! And 26% is rated M!)
RE:gen vs. pr0n: It's probably because most of us are teenagers, and are at that age, where hormones are running high and everything is oversexualized. Damn puberty. *shakes fist*
Considering the difference in number of pages between #1 and #2, definitely.
X3 You should see the graphs. For the most popular character's it's like Sasuke and Naruto are all the way up there, and Sakura is so far behind, and Hinata is even farther, and in her wake are all the rest... And for the pairings, the boys yet again are all the way at the top, and SasuSaku is trailing behind, and so far below is NaruHina, and trailing after that is NejiTen and NaruSaku neck and neck, and the rest do their best to follow. I'm such a geek, researching and graphing shit like this, but it's so fun to see the results.
Sort of smacks me in the face like a nonexistent flopping fish.
*flails* THAT IS SO TRUE.

AND THIS:
Sasuke (the original Itachitard)
I LOVE YOU.
SasuHina catching up to ItaSasu and the like, because while the Uchiha Drama Queens are Teh 'Cest, they have way more canon evidence (i.e. actual interaction) than Sasuke and Hinata.
Why? It just mocks me BECAUSE I KNOW IT IS WRONG. And the latest chapter with Itachi's chair, seriously, I'm so bad. Don't even get me started on Meet the Robinsons...><;;;
I love you, seriously I'm such a dork for fangirling when I see stuff like this. xD

on 2007-Dec-17, Monday 04:25 (UTC)I know 20% sounds like a small number, but it's a whole fifth of the section. That's an enormous percentage in a fandom that puts out over a hundred thousand stories. Also, consider that a lot of T-rated fics are either worthy of an M rating or put their pr0n up on AFF instead.
<--so sad NejixHinata is dead last. D;
Oh, but it isn't! It has 29 pages last I checked.
I LOVE YOU.
I LOVE YOU TOO~

on 2007-Dec-17, Monday 03:34 (UTC)In actuality, NaruHina and SasuSaku both confuse me. Both pairings are completely one-sided and yet I've seen many a RHFG get when it's pointed out. Why doesn't NaruSaku get the same love when there's WAY more canonical evidence for it during Shippuuden
(although Naruto's obsession with Sasuke might get in the way of it...)?Itachi/Sakura??!! It's really that popular? O.O
And somehow NaruHina fans are more long-winded than NaruSasu fans. That really surprises me.
I wonder how much of that 20% of pr0n is PWP versus plot-centered-pr0n.
no subject
on 2007-Dec-17, Monday 05:13 (UTC)X3 Well, it's obviously subtext in canon anyway. Ah, Kishimoto. I have no idea what he's trying to do most of the time.
Why doesn't NaruSaku get the same love when there's WAY more canonical evidence for it during Shippuuden?
There are some things we may never understand. It might have to do with which of the girls the writer identifies with most, or which of the boys is the writer's favorite, or maybe their interpretation of canon is completely different from ours. Also, SasuSaku and NaruHina are side-by-side ships along with NejiTen and ShikaIno; the same prolific (and long-winded) people write for them, just in different proportions. How many stories on fanfiction.net have all four het pairings together, with one being prominent?
XD ItaSaku is much like the Inuyasha fandom's SessKag ship. A lot of fangirls have a phase like that, where they want the female protagonist to get with the hot older guy, the deadly one who manages to trump his little brother. Forbidden romance! Hot enemy sex! It doesn't necessarily have to be canon, or to make sense. A lot of people write for themselves, not for an audience. Hence self-insertion and OCs and the like.
SasuNaru/NaruSasu/etc. fans are the majority, and write a lot, and are very rabid, but they're not the most intense ship in the fandom. I don't know what makes NaruHina fans so emotionally invested in their OTP--maybe they've been in Hinata's position before, or they really hate Sasuke and Sakura, or they believe that Hinata is Naruto's best/most likely happy ending--but they are persistent in a way that redefines the term. On NarutoFan and Gaia they launch massive fantard wars on NaruSaku fans and the like. They don't write as many stories as the top two pairings, but what they do write is much more likely to be novel-length. o.o It's kind of scary, really.
A lot of the PWP is probably put up on AFF instead.
(Gyaaargh, why is this reply so looong. I talk too much. >.<;; )

on 2007-Dec-17, Monday 04:53 (UTC)But it saddens me how all of the people on the popularity list are so... standard. The hero, the anti-hero the 'OMGHAWT' bad boys, the 'hot' girl, and the 'cute' girl. They're so STERIOTYPICAL! WHY, God, WHY!?! I mean... Every manga you're in, you'll find a Naruto(Luffy, Vash...) and a Sasuke(Wolfwood, Walter [Hellsing])... EVERY MANGA. I ask you.
And this has made me sad, because neither of my favorites (Shino and Kiba...) Are on the list at all. And the pairings... WTF!?!? How can INCEST be more popular than... well, my favorite pairing? (KibaShino shuddap...) It sickens me.
And all the pr0n just goes to show how dirty-minded all of the English-speaking populous is today. >.<
Ah... Sometimes I hate being a fan of the lower-loved characters and pairings... *siiigh....*

on 2007-Dec-17, Monday 05:23 (UTC)Be strong! The supporters of the secondary and minor characters are what make this fandom wonderful. Sasuke and Naruto and Sakura and such would be boring as hell without people like Iruka and Team 8 and Team 10 and everyone to offset them. *hugs*
no subject
on 2007-Dec-17, Monday 13:30 (UTC)Anyways, well done you for all this. Musta taken ages. I'm surprised at the popularity of some of the pairings…
I wish you'd also do one on ‘Most Used Clichés’. If I have to read ONE more writer use the words 'The Blonde' as a way to refer to Naruto or similarly 'The Brunette/Raven' (*gags*) as some kind alternative name or title for Sasuke - I might just scream. In fact... I have... frequently. I also hate how much 'smirking' goes on. Half the time I don't think these writers know how to properly use this word in a sentence. Then there are the clichés about eyes… for some reason the word ‘orbs’ is hideously popular when describing eyes, as is cerulean…*cough*
FFdotNET is such a cesspool. Every Tom, Dick and Harry thinks they can write. (Or should that be Anne, Jane and Sally?) I used to write FanFic when I was in my young teens but I had the decency to know I sucked majorly. However, every now and then I come across a gem.

How does Naruto fandom remind you of CCS fandom?

on 2007-Dec-18, Tuesday 17:10 (UTC)But the character coding is a recent event in some sections (the first fics were in the end of 2001, but the vast majority (basically I think all of them except 3)of all character categorized stories are from 2003 onwards, so this may slqant any results you get particularly on slightly later characters like Gaara and Itachi, but seeing as the rate of fanfics seems to increase something akin to exponentially, these are probably a small volume in relation to the total.
And some people don't bother with selecting it when they put it in, so infact you've also missed out those by using character codes.
But overall I think your stats are right(give or take Naruto/ Sasuke switching).
But I think the numbers have increased by a few page already.
no subject
on 2007-Dec-21, Friday 18:24 (UTC)(And the great thing about the character codes is that you don't have to worry about this and that and the other Kama Sutra, it's just Character A and Character B, any configuration. Nothing to fuss over with the SasuNaru fangirls versus the NaruSasu fangirls versus the SasuNaruSasu and the NaruSasuNaru and the oh my Jesus it never ends. @.@ Sasuke and Naruto in whichever order your heart desires plz. ^^; )
Ah, ff.n~ Increasing every day with new and exciting kinds of fail~ I'm keeping an eye on the Naruto and Sasuke fics 5K words or more in the Just In section, it's hilarious. Oh I have no life.

on 2007-Dec-20, Thursday 08:38 (UTC)I totally agree. KakaIru has never made any sense to me and why the hell it is so popular is beyond me.
Also, ItaSaku even making it on the list makes me cringe. Scary that there's that many fans of that ship ...

...I am still confused. Are...are you advertising a tourism trip based on the events in Hangover 2? In Indonesia? (Isn't Bangkok in Thailand? And Bali...okay, that's in Indonesia, I'll give you that much. Still, a French bot telling me about a German forum with information on an Indonesian/Thai trip inspired by an American movie? Damn, globalisation doesn't miss a beat.)
"Very Bad Trip"? Is...is that really the French translation of The Hangover? I'm not sure what I have to say to that. And..."tcho"? "kiffer"? My brain. My brain.
