Alt-pairings and crack pairings can have enormous fanbases. Sometimes it's because a writer thinks two characters will work well together as a couple, and have an interesting dynamic; sometimes it's for the pretty; sometimes it's that type of self-insertion writer who uses a canon character as an avatar for their own self, so they can be with another of their favorite characters. Everyone has their own reasons for fandom.
